Jacqueline Bley Ryall: Abstract Connections

February 8 – April 28, 2024

Rotating quarterly, AMSET’s Café Arts Series gives local artists the opportunity to feature their artwork in a museum.

The Art Museum of Southeast Texas is excited to present JACQUELINE BLEY RYALL: Abstract Connections on view from February 8 – April 28, 2024 in AMSET’s Café Arts series for local artists.

Abstract Connections includes recent paintings by local artist and attorney Jacqueline “Jackie” Ryall in the museum’s café. The focus of her café exhibition at AMSET depicts the faces of humanity. She states, “although we are different, we are still interconnected.” Ryall was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but moved to Chagrin Falls, Ohio as an adolescent, and then to Houston as a young adult. Later she moved to Beaumont when she was married and currently resides here.

Ryall has a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and worked as a Registered Nurse in the Houston Medical Center for almost eight years. She then attended law school and received a Doctorate of Jurisprudence degree in 1991. She is currently an attorney at Provost Umphrey Law Firm, where she specializes in medical malpractice, general litigation, personal injury and products liability.

Ryall is inspired by family members, including her grandmother who was artistically inclined, and by acclaimed artists, Salvador Dalí, M.C. Escher and Jackson Pollock. She works primarily in acrylic on canvas, creating abstract and figural compositions. The works in this exhibition will focus on her figural compositions. When asked what she would want visitors to think about when seeing her work, Ryall said, “Most of all, I would like my paintings to make people happy [and] I would like them to think about relationships and how they affect others.”

Jerome Cabeen: Everyday People

May 2 – July 28, 2024

The Art Museum of Southeast Texas will present JEROME CABEEN: Everyday People on view from May 2 – July 28, 2024 in AMSET’s Café Arts series for local artists.

AMSET’s upcoming café exhibition will be a solo show of local photographer Jerome Cabeen. Cabeen’s work has been featured prominently in the museum’s Café Arts space, including in a previous solo show in 2019 and in both of the Beaumont Camera Club’s annual juried exhibitions (2021 and 2023). The 2023 Camera Club group exhibition was juried by Houston-based appraiser Melanie Modica. She selected Cabeen’s photographs Caminando Hacia la Refriega and The One Eyed Jack Fleeing His Demons as best in show winners. As the Best in Show winner, Cabeen was awarded a solo exhibition in the café for 2024. Funding is generously provided by philanthropists Rob Clark and Jerry Thacker.

Cabeen is well-known in the Southeast Texas community for his photography. He is often seen at local festivals, rallies and art events with a camera in-hand. It was in 2004, when he began teaching art and directing Catholic missions internationally, that he took up photography, capturing images of the many people and cultures who became friends, neighbors and passersby. This exhibition, Everyday People, will feature new digital photographs of the people and places that Cabeen has experienced in his recent travels.

Join us for the opening reception on Friday, May 17, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM. This event is free and open to the public.
