Keith Carter: The Boneyard Series

January 20 – February 18, 2024

In tandem with Earlie Hudnall, Jr.: Homeward, on display in the main galleries, AMSET presents this permanent collection installation of 13 of Keith Carter’s photographs from his Boneyard series. Keith Carter (b. 1948) is a Beaumont-based photographer and is internationally recognized for his silver gelatin photographs of people, places, and animals. He currently holds the position of Endowed Walles Chair of Arts at Lamar University, Beaumont, Texas.

For the Boneyard series, Carter visited the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (AMARG), a United States Air Force aircraft, missile storage and maintenance facility in Tucson, Arizona, located on Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. The AMARG cares for thousands of aircraft. They store excess aircraft waiting for future use and selling or removing parts from decommissioned planes and jets.

As you view the works in this gallery, consider the similarities and differences between Carter and Hudnall’s photographs. Carter and Hudnall have been friends for over 30 years. Some questions you might consider are: What type of photographic process do they use? What is the subject matter? Is there a difference in size, shape or color of the photographs?
